To be charitable, I wish to say that there is only a designated amount of time for in-America, local and sports news.

It may very well be US policy to keep the public as little informed about what goes on in the international scene and US involvement abroad. To be sure, this will obviate having to make explanations to, and to answer pointed/embarrassing questions from, curious or concerned members of the public. Also, should the need arises, it might be quite easy to manipulate an uninformed public about foreign matters.

In any case, lots of people have so many interesting things to while away away their time with that, as long as everything is fine at home, they won't care a hoot about the outside world. Perhaps that explains why so many people in N. America are very parochial in their outlook and they can be greatly shocked by anything that upset the peace and equilibrium.
