I understand the need for businesses to remain competitive. However, your business-school explanation excludes one thing: the human element. What happens to the person who's 55 years old, has been a valued employee for 30 years, is still highly productive, but now is deemed "excess baggage"? Where you and I differ is that I tend to view the evolution of American business at a personal level, from the employee's perspective, whereas you tend to view it from the perspective of the CFO.

I may be old-fashioned, but I've always thought that if an employee has given 30 years of his life to a company, then the company owes the employee more than a Timex watch and six months' severance.
