I agree. But as I'm sure you know this is a statistical phenomenon. Sure, some people still have the skill and inclination to perform serious aftermarket modifications on their cars, but the vast majority of would-be weekend mechanics would be asking for serious trouble to attempt this. The same is true in the PC world. There's a real gap between those who really know what they're doing and those who think they know what they're doing, and it's the latter group that accounts for the overwhelming majority of the anecdotal "problem reports" that Charles Tutt refers to.

But with new PC prices where they are today there's little need to consider anything other than "Plan A" for virtually any prospective customer, including those who really do know what they're doing.
