One thing not mentioned well in this article
the Clinton administration held out hope that a modus vivendi could be reached, with the assistance of the Saudis and Pakistanis.
is that our great President Clinton was negotiating with the King of Saudi Arabia. This king had a heart attack and power has shifted to the king's son, a son who is much less a friend of the U.S. and seems to finance Osama Bin Laden either as blackmail or because of sympathy. The overtures of Clinton to the king were approprate.

The Northern alliance, including Massoud, had just finished turning victory into defeat by spending all their time and ammunition shooting at various faction members in a quest for supreme power instead of trying to form a nation. Clinton showed his wisdom when he was wary of their pleas for support.

We would be so much better off if Clinton were still in charge.

TP (You can quote me on that!)
