NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Dell Computer announced the signing of a 5-year, "multi-billion dollar" strategic alliance with EMC to expand the growth of the companies's storage systems business.

As part of the agreement, Dell (DELL: news, chart, profile) will be the leading reseller of EMC's Clarion enterprise storage system, which will become Dell's standard offering for storage area networks and high-end network-attached storage.

The companies have also agreed to collaborate on developing future open, network storage systems.

"We believe this agreement effectively doubles Dell's market opportunity in the data storage business," said Kevin Rollins, Dell's president and chief operating officer.

Dell closed Friday up 83 cents at $24.05 and EMC (EMC: news, chart, profile)added 27 cents to $11.51.
