MONTREAL, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Alcan Inc. (Toronto:AL.TO - news) (NYSE:AL - news) said on Wednesday it expects western world demand for aluminum to decline by 4.7 percent this year, the worst consumption decline in 20 years for the metal, but sees demand rebounding by 3 percent in 2002. In documents made available for a presentation to analysts by Montreal-based Alcan, which is the world's second-largest aluminum maker, the company said western world demand for aluminum rose by 3.4 percent last year. Alcan also said the ramp-up of its new $2 billion aluminum smelter in Alma is complete, with all 432 pots in operation. It expects Alma to produce a full 400,000 tonnes of aluminum in 2002 and the smelter has an attractive capacity expansion potential.
