Dell Computer to Resell EMC's Data-Storage Systems (Update2)
By John Stebbins

Austin, Texas, Oct. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp., the No. 1 personal computer maker, will resell EMC Corp.'s Clariion line of computer-storage systems in a five-year alliance that may add billions of dollars to their businesses.

Dell will become the ``leading reseller'' of the Clariion, line, which is aimed at mid-sized companies, EMC and Dell said in a statement. EMC's Symmetrix systems are bought mostly by large corporations and can cost several millions of dollars. Dell and EMC said they will work together if Dell's customers need a Symmetric system.

EMC, the largest maker of data-storage systems, and Dell are seeking to broaden their product offerings. Both companies have announced thousands of job cuts. Last week, EMC reported a third- quarter loss, its first in almost 12 years, as sales fell and competition forced the company to cut prices.

``We expect Dell's direct sales model will increase EMC's reach and capability to better service enterprise-class Clariion customers,'' Joseph Tucci, EMC chief executive, said in a statement.

Shares of Dell, based in Austin, Texas, rose 15 cents to $24.20 in early trading. They had gained 38 percent this year. EMC, based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, rose 41 cents to $11.92. The stock had dropped about 82 percent this year.
