You see, Brinkley owned Sunday Morning and he delighted in showing how stupid Donaldson was and how smart Will is. Example Brinkley: "Sam has a mouth and George has a brain". After Brinkley made his exit, shortly after famously warning America about Clinton, the worse he's ever seen and four more years of Clinton G.D. nonsense, the ratings tanked. They were not helped by George Stephanopoulos, who is regularly corrected by Mr. Will. I suspect that consultants asked Will to update his attire when they gave him the additional role of commentary. The prescient and inspiring words of the great David Brinkley:ABC News commentator David Brinkley roared into retirement at the close of his network's election-night coverage with a few less-than-kind words for President Clinton. "We all look forward with great pleasure to four years of wonderful, inspiring speeches, full of wit, poetry, music, love, and affection plus more goddamn nonsense," snapped Brinkley just prior to ABC's 10 p.m. (E.T.) sign-off on Tuesday. The seventy-six-year-old journalist, who has covered every presidential race since 1956, is retiring from regular broadcasts, and Sunday marks his final edition of This Week With David Brinkley. Shocked by Brinkley's outburst, Peter Jennings curtly reminded his cantankerous cohort that they were still on the air. But Jenning's warning--and two that followed--went unheeded. Brinkley criticized Clinton's victory speech as "one of the worst things I've ever heard," and, while complimenting his coworkers' creativity, he noted that Clinton "has not a creative bone in his body. Therefore, he's a bore and will always be a bore." Tuesday's incident led some to believe that Brinkley's retirement is not entirely voluntary. On Wednesday, an ABC spokeswoman justified Brinkley's statements: "He's a commentator for ABC News. He has strong opinions and he expressed them last night." As for our opinion, we'll miss David Brinkley. mrshowbiz.go.com
