No talks with Pak till it reins in terrorists: PM

SUBHASH MISHRA

Lucknow October 22, 20:59

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday said in no uncertain terms that talks with Pakistan would not be held unless it stopped abetting cross-border terrorism.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow on Monday evening, the Prime Minister said, "Today's attack on the airport in Jammu also proves that Pakistan has not stopped abetting cross-border terrorism in India. In such a atmosphere, talks between the two countries would be of no use."

Asked for his reaction to Defence Minister George Fernandes' statement that Pakistan was 'indirectly' involved in the attack on the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11, Vajpayee said, "Pakistan cannot be absolved of such charges as it was this country which not only armed and trained the Taliban but also protected them and gave them shelter and recognition."

Vajpayee also rejected outright the contention that India was under any pressure from the US to open a dialogue with Pakistan.

"At the time of Kargil war, US had wanted that some land be given to Pakistan to resolve the issue, but we rejected it outright, the US then proposed that we hold negotiations with Pakistan, but we turned down that too. We know how to deal with our problems. It is only the menace of terror that we are fighting jointly with the US."

However, the prime minister chose to dodge a question about whether India would attack terrorist camps located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Reacting to the recent storming of the disputed site in Ayodhya by VHP functionaries, Vajpayee admitted that the incident was a setback to his efforts of finding a peaceful solution to the controversy. He, however, chose to deny that BJP youth activists had vandalised the Taj Mahal in Agra a few days back.

The prime minister clarified that the Ayodhya controversy could be resolved either through the court or through negotiations between the two concerned parties.

In reply to a question on his statement that the party was growing apart from the government, Vajpayee said the issue had been exaggerated. He also denied that there were differences between him and party leaders. Earlier, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for a convention centre at the Lucknow Medical College.

There were numerous drives in the Eastern United States to funnel money to the fighters and to purchase weapons in Europe. All on the QT.

The IRA has done the same and now we know the bin Laden group as well.

Same game, different players.
