I vacillate between being grossed out, and honored, thinking I must surely be on a great mission in life. It probably is at least as old as you say. It's from Spanish times. The PHD's can spend their time better, I'll look it up. I'm all curious now. Seems kinda sacriligous to me, so there must be an explanation for it.

In 1519, on the Roman Catholic Feast Day of Corpus Christi, Spanish explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered a lush semi-tropical bay on what is now the southern coast of Texas. The bay, and the city that later sprung up there, took the name of the feast day celebrating the "Body of Christ."

So it was all a matter of timing?

When I was growing up, communion was one of my favorite things. I can't say I find that gross at all. I like the symbolism.
