‘India won’t let Pak nuclear arms fall into militants’ hands’

16.35 IST 22nd Oct 2001

By IndiaExpress Bureau

India will not shy away from destroying Pakistani nuclear arsenal by a pre-emptive action should it feel that the stockpile is falling into the hands of terrorists. This is the firm belief of American military think tanks and strategists.

"India, another nuclear power, would not stand idly by, if it appeared that the Pakistani nuclear arsenal were about to fall into the hands of extremists," The Washington Post quoted the strategists as saying.

Such a pre-emptive action on India’s part, they fear, could trigger a war on the sub-continent.

"Having both US and India fighting Islamic extremists," warned Mackubin Owens, a strategist at the naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, "Would play into the hands of bin Laden. He could point out once again that this is a new crusade."

The regional impact of the present turmoil on Pakistan also has the experts worrying. If its government fell, it is feared, other Islamic governments friendly to the US, such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, might follow suit.

Anthrax scare ‘infects’ Kashmir Valley too

18.20 IST 22nd Oct 2001

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Letters containing suspicious-looking white powder landed in three media offices in Jammu & Kashmir, said police on Monday.

The letters were handed over to the local offices of US agency Associated Press (AP), the US-headquartered television channel Cable News Network (CNN) and a local newspaper, the Himalayan Mail.

Police have taken the letters for further investigation. The white powder will be tested in laboratories, police added.

The envelopes meant for AP and CNN were ‘sent’ from their bureaux in New Delhi.

The letter for AP had a note, which said: "It is a gift for all those who work for America or support America."
