BELFAST, Northern Ireland (Reuters) - Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams made an unprecedented call Monday to the Irish Republican Army (news - web sites) to give up its arms, breaking with history in a bid to rescue Northern Ireland's tattered peace process.

In a dramatic intervention that could herald an epochal act of arms disposal by the guerrillas, Adams -- whose party is the IRA's political ally -- said disarmament was needed to end a crisis that he blamed on Britain and its Unionist supporters.

Asked whether he thought that the shortage of democracy in the Arab world was also a root cause of frustration, Moussa said that this was not the issue after Sept. 11.

"There is one thing above all that is looming over, with despair, and that is the Palestinian question. Many things depend on it," he said.
