Frank,
I have a suggestion concerning the header at the top of the G & K page that might help with the advise issue. It should be stated clearly that we are discussing G & K but not offering investment advise. I know that many posters state this but somehow it gets lost on new investors.
Yes, many of us have sustained losses but I have never for one moment considered anyone else at fault but myself. I figured it was part of the learning curve. Sometimes these curves are painful and dangerous. And sometimes they are glorious.

how to avoid influencing others unduly by voicing strongly held opinions which might put them at risk.

I think you are beating yourself up about this too much. Over and over again people ask for specific advice and over and over again we reject the idea of specifics in favor of instruction. No one here is holding themselves out as a guru. Everyone here has been honest about their clay feet ... especially now!

Only by never expressing an opinion about anything can one avoid the possibility of someone deciding to act on that opinion. If one is honest about how the opinion is stated, as I believe this board manages with rather astounding regularity, then the listener has to take responsibility if he or she then acts without making their own assessment. On every issue here there is some diversity of opinion. The only people who post "I'm right and you're wrong" are the interlopers.

I had always visualized that our efforts would empower each of us to make our own decisions through shared due diligence, but since we failed in your case, I'm sure we have in others as well, and that's deeply disturbing to consider.

I certainly don't think that you failed in any way. Some folks learn the hard way, and I'm one of them :) I also hope that you and everyone understand that I don't hold anyone else responsible for my portfolio in any way (although I'm certainly grateful for the knowledge that has been imparted).

Perhaps the solution for those who can't resist the urge to be led, is to avoid threads like this, and probably analysts and financial journalists as well, and participate in the market through a number of index funds as Mucho Maas has suggested.

Ouch, but quite possibly true. It's my hope that I'll be able to learn from others, without placing too much faith in their analysis. If that lesson truly sinks in from this debacle, it will be worth the price.
