Laden will attack only invading US troops: Taliban

TEHRAN: Osama Bin Laden has assured Afghanistan's Taliban regime that he would attack only invading US forces and not strike any other country, a Taliban official told an Iranian newspaper.

"Osama Bin Laden has agreed with Mullah (Mohammed) Omar not to attack other countries. We only attack the US forces who invade Afghanistan," Qari Ahmadullah, head of security affairs for the Taliban, said in comments published on Sunday in the daily Entekhab.

The US holds Bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network responsible for the September 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington. US President George W. Bush ordered on October 7 a wide-ranging military campaign against Bin Laden, an exiled Saudi dissident, and the Taliban for harbouring him.

Ahmadullah was quoted as telling Entekhab that Mullah Omar's morale was high and that he hoped to "destroy the world powers."

He said that he had no information on Bin Laden, but that he had heard he was fine.

Ahmadullah acknowledged that the Taliban could not combat high-flying US warplanes, but said that the fighters would teach US ground troops a lesson once they entered Afghanistan.

"If the US attacks Afghanistan and its troops enter Afghanistan, then we will deal with them," he was quoted as saying.
