On most commuter planes (the kind Mesa flies) knocking out the electronics won't make a bit of difference for control. All mechanical/hydraulic. You can usually fly them with all the electric shut off completely.

Truth is, on everything but the latest generation or two, the electronics are pretty optional for keeping the plane flying and pointing it where you want to. The 767s that the terrorists chose on 9-11 are mostly hydraulic servos. Electronics help monitor them and certainly are essential for long range naviation and flight planning, but the plane will fly nicely without. (At higher altitudes, where more precise control is critical, flight withough an autopilot is quite hazardous, but still possible.)

The electronics on planes are supposed to be tested for a lightning strike, but I wonder if they've been tested for the equivalent of a lightning strike from INSIDE the plane?
