Ike,

thanks for the additional insight to "Masood the lion of Panjsheer" I still respect him as a great man....it wasn't the inability to reconcile that killed him...it was Bin Ladens assasins....I think he did the good fight.

thankyou for your special insight to the situation and adding to my understanding!

Love,
Jeff

>>>Afghanistan under Taliban around Kandhar area was found suitable for protecting the assets and pipelines leading to Baluchistan. Pakistan saw in them a force that could provide them with 'strategic depth' Vis a Vis India. Pakistan 70% economy lies on the eastern bank of river Indus, the main GT road at some place passes less than 10 KM from Indian-Pakistan, to provide some depth to the country is a strategic academic night mare for Pakistani strategists. In search of some kind of depth, now as their war courses and books will tell them a friendly Afghanistan even a repressive and medieval one gives them some kind of insulation form Indian attack.

It was a kind of mutually dependent relationship, Pakistan exploited them and they exploited the cardinal weakness of our mentality our dispute with India, yesterday friends like Hikmatyar and Masood lost Kabul and old allies became enemies,

this appears to have been the mistake? I obviously need to know more....I just see the difference in philosophy between Masood a Tajik and the pushtun Taliban....a big difference? Today between Wahhabi Islam if that's the correct wording a very strict medieval view of Islam? ( an arab view) I know Masoud viewed woman as equal and believed in education. It was my understanding the Taliban supported by Pakistan flushed Masood from Kabul. Like you said the Russians were gone....the following power struggle seemed to be the problem? Pakistan appears to have made the difference? I understand the need for friendly neighbors. this is all just recent past and the embrassing of Bin Ladens philosophies is troubling. Taliban and bin laden appear as one? These sentiments appear to have spilled over to Pakistan? Yes, Pakistan is moving fast, and apparently in the correct direction...but, past actions are a concern? I understand the close relationship w/ afghanistan...pakistan seems like 2 countries? what about afghans opium stashes held in pakistasn? These should be destroyed.
