Milan, I'm sure you realize that Dell does a lot of their own validation on the parts that they sell. It's not as easy as grabbing cheap components and throwing them in a system to ship. Dell actually weeds out all the bugs and failures before hand so that they have confidence in the configurations that they sell.

You're probably right that the CPU has little to do with it, but it's really the combination of all the parts in your system. Just because each individual part is of high quality, doesn't mean that it will work with all the other parts in your system. OEMs like Dell are valuable to the average consumer because they know that when they buy Dell, whatever is on the inside of their systems - works.

Their customers realize this when they give Dell great scores every time for customer service and support. Many of Dell's customers don't even need to call them for problems, which saves them a great deal for support costs. If Dell ever decided to adopt AMD, they would have to double their validation efforts, just for a few more product lines. To the bean counters, it probably isn't worth it. Adding product lines means adding support, validation teams, and technical staff. Staying with a single CPU provider can be much easier.

But thanks for the very interesting testimonial. It's always interesting to me to hear this kind of first hand knowledge.
