You mentioned TIAA-CREF. I once looked at their performance record and it was positively superb.

I've not ever done a serious study of this. But as I recall, all their funds were 5 star ranked with Morningstar almost all the time; perhaps one was not, though I cannot recall which, and it was only 4. The returns were remarkably stable and almost always at the top of their categories. And, since they were a nonprofit outfit, stock price gains went to the bottom line. And, same point, their expenses were as low, if not lower, then Vanguard's.

As I recall they started index fund investing in the early 70s, got a great many criticisms in the 80s over their lack of diversity, and then in the 90s put in place a variety of funds.
