Re: Goodwill

It's an interesting subject. Is Intel retaining too large
an amount of Goodwill? Are they amortizing it at a reasonable rate, over five years or up to twenty years?
I hope we have someone with an accounting background who will dissect it.
I remember a company (Yogen Fruz) three years ago
where an investor warned the thread that they were amortizing their good will over twenty years whereas the
industry average was five years. They were thus giving
a false impression of higher earnings.
Some investors define good will as the amount a company
overpaid for an acquisition.

Re: "I'd like to hear a real explanation of goodwill if we have an expert on the subject around. "

Goodwill is having AMD shareholders pay $2.5 Million to endow a chair in the Chairman's name - after the Chairman made about $12 million of PERSONAL gain after selling his shares a few months before the chairman announced impending losses.

TGPTDR:

"NG, I'm looking for info on post by PE re AMD 3Q earnings to be around -$100m. Do you remember such a post? Tony seems to think there was one."

I vaguely recall Paul making such a statement but not thinking much of it as AMD management had already disclosed as much...

Oh and by the way, during the period q1/99 to q3/01, during which goodwill skyrocketed by $5.4 billion and L/T investments plummetedby $2.4 billion, q3/01 quarterly earnings of $106 million were lower by $1.9 billion than the $2.0 billion in q1/99...Hopefully for INTC afficiondos the startling adverse changes in these categories over this period is behind, 'cause if not, it's red ahead!
