Bohr was one of the great men of 20th century physics not only because of his scientific contributions but because he was the first to see and accept the profound philosophical implications of the quantum revolution. His debates on this subject with Einstein, who for all his brilliance never really came to terms with the quantum, were legendary.

Nearly a century later physics is still grappling with these implications and is on the verge of another breakthrough which will have even greater implications. For a tantalizing glimpse at the issues involved I highly recommend The Physics of Consciousness by Evan Harris Walker. See amazon.com for a fuller description.
