an historical description of actual cultural mixing
Then why do you still have a "Little Italy" or "Chinatown". The melting pot only works when there is plenty of sex between the cultures and so a hard demarcation can no longer be made. Educational multiculturalism is kind of sex for the mind, it allows but does not require a blending of cultures. That may appear as new food preferences, appreaciation of world music, or an increased interest in your own heritage. Common interests can lead to physical sex and intermarriage too. That is the real melting pot, it's not a loss of culture since there will still be pure strains, but it represents a spectrum.
