(Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure, and Ericsson Communications today announced that Juniper Networks M-series Internet backbone routers were successfully deployed in TelstraSaturn's newly commissioned, IP backbone network. TelstraSaturn is the first company in New Zealand to deploy a high-bandwidth network allowing seamless delivery of voice and data IP services. According to analyst firm International Data Corporation, Internet usage and business Internet requirements in New Zealand have grown by 170 per cent in the past four years (source: IDC Research, The New Zealand Internet Commerce Market Outlook 1997-2004, 1999). This significant increase indicates the potential market for TelstraSaturn's advanced IP service offerings. "TelstraSaturn's new Juniper Networks-based IP infrastructure system is a first for New Zealand, enabling faster delivery and greater accessibility for its convergent communication and entertainment services," said Tony Baird, director of network technology at TelstraSaturn. "By connecting users over a high-capacity metropolitan area network, we are matching our core network capacity with high-speed, edge access services for our business and consumer customers." "We have designed this new network to bring TelstraSaturn customers the best of both worlds. This is a true next-generation network, but the design ensures that TelstraSaturn customers can seamlessly connect their existing networking equipment," said Ericsson Communications General Manager, TelstraSaturn account, On-Fai Lam. "It exploits the economies and scalability of high-speed Ethernet technology, but also has mechanisms to guarantee the quality of real-time, smart IP services, such as voice." Juniper Networks M160 and M20 Internet backbone routers have already been deployed in TelstraSaturn's national network and are today carrying customer traffic via a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) traffic engineered, STM-16 IP backbone. The network marks the first fully commercial deployment of an STM-16 (2.5 Gigabits per second) IP backbone network in New Zealand. This implementation enables TelstraSaturn to offer the fastest and highest capacity, national Internet access available in New Zealand today, as well as a comprehensive range of value-added, smart IP services, such as virtual private networks. "This business partnership demonstrates the growing consumer demand for reliable, scalable networks with low operational complexity at both the local and national level, and particularly for the growing Asia-Pacific market," said Martin Claridge, Juniper Networks director, South Asia operations. "The introduction of Juniper Networks M160 and M20 routers and the smart IP applications offered by TelstraSaturn ensures our mutual customers experience a substantially improved quality and range of business and consumer services." About TelstraSaturn Limited TelstraSaturn Ltd is a company merging the New Zealand operations of Telstra Corporation and Austar United Communications, each of whom have 50 percent share holding.
