A not so well known book by John Steinbeck called 'Travels With Charley' is one of my favorites. It's the true story of Steinbeck's trip around the country with his dog (Charley) in a camper. At one point, he meets an old fellow out in the middle of nowhere and gets into a sort of philosophical discussion. The old guy speculates that Americans must have an object of hatred, and now it was the Russians' turn. The book was written in 1963, I think, during the Cold War and just before the beginning of our involvement in Vietnam. It is also much more humorous than I have suggested here.

So, here we are in 2001. The USSR is no more, China has taken some baby steps towards freeing their markets in a limited sense, most of the rest of southeast Asia is pure capitalism. Who's left? Yup, the Moslems.

Personally, I suggest that we go kick Brazil's ass for being too Amazonian.
