Cary,
I took a class in grad school at the Universtity of Chicago on the subject of deterrence and nuclear war. It is never pleasant to discuss this subject but it is worse not to and have policy be made on the fly that leads to disaster. It is better for our leaders to be discussing our options and when applicable relaying our "deterrent" message even to terrorists.

Example and i am NOT advocating this course of action--What if we told the taliban; give us bin laden or we will nuke your entire country? You think they might give him up then?? I know they are crazy but maybe not that crazy. The choice would be a tradeoff of their and their families/countrymans survival for bin laden and his band of 5000 crazy arabs. mike
PS Notice the end of PC in my posts because bin ladens supporters ARE 5000 or so crazy fucking arabs.
