Applied Materials gets order, opens facility in China
NEW YORK, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news), the largest maker of equipment used in the production of microchips, on Thursday said it had received an order worth more than $200 million from a Chinese foundry.

The order makes Applied Materials the primary equipment supplier for Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., a new foundry in Shanghai, China. Shipments of a variety of systems are scheduled to begin next year.

Applied Materials said its new 90,000 square foot facility in Shanghai would serve the company as it expanded service and support capabilities in the region.

``We are very impressed with the progress of China's chipmaking industry and the commitment from companies such as GSMC to further facilitate the development of the region's growing semiconductor market,'' Applied Materials Chairman and Chief Executive James Morgan said in a statement.

Applied Materials China has sales and support offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Wuxi, the company said.

Chief Executive Officer James Morgan was expected to address a ceremony marking the official opening of the company's new facility in Shanghai later on Thursday.
