Usually the first tapeout is called A0. Minor changes advance the number, such as A1, A2, and A3. Major changes advance the letter, such as B0 and C0. When each one occurs really depends on the circumstances.

These days, most new processors become production-worthy after some B-step or C-step tapeout, such as B2 or C0. On rare occasions does an A-step model become production-worthy, but it's not realistic to hope for when planning a project.
