do you mean to say that they do not identify themselves as Americans?

They both later married black women, have mostly black friends, and they identify with "black" issues, like affirmative action. It's simply a given that they're both Democrats despite being pretty conservative. They're smart, accomplished, affluent, and are not distinguishable in any significant way from the mainstream. They have no hostility to whites--but when they go "home" physically or in their hearts, it's to their enclaves. I would say that stops short of assimilated. At least as much quilt as melting pot. Definitely not assimilated the way I'm assimilated.

My ethnicity is just one tiny strand of who Karen is. A few unusual recipes, an occasional anecdote, a pang when the tanks rolled into Prague, a tear at the Velvet Revolution. Nothing more. More significant than the few years of violin lessons I had as a kid, less significant than being introverted. I don't believe it could ever be like that for the two men in question.

And of course they're proud Americans.
