Deming's work today . . .

As a big Deming fan I am thrilled to see the great man's work mentioned on this prestigious thread. If anyone is interested in learning more, there is an active worldwide Deming Electronic Network that can be reached at the following website:

deming.ces.clemson.edu

Good point about the impact of Juran, Ishikawa, Taguchi, and others. Deming was the first to acknowledge the great work of these other masters.

Thanks, you reminded me of the actual dates. I didn't feel like looking for my "Out Of The Crises" book for actual dates.

Yes the combination of Deming, Juran, Ishikawa and Taguchi were the total package in creating a business that continues to improve quality and reduce cost.

I think it was IBM that ordered 1000 parts from a Japanese company(in the 60's or 70's) and demanded that no more than 3 pieces be out of tolerance. The Japanese firm producing nothing but parts that met specification was bewildered, but they complied and produced 3 out of tolerance parts on purpose and wrapped them separately. Interesting what a change in perspective can do for you.

What happened in steal is known. But I also think that the fact that Japan really built starting in 1950 and America was carrying infrastructure capitol baggage of decades old steal making technology made seeing the need for quality vs cost and value difficult. One in hindsight can see the connections. Seeing connection as they occur is difficult. Those who argue against Missile Defense for example can't even see all the past connections.
