I suspect if Apple had licensed an X86 port of the Mac in 1985 shortly after it became a hit the world might never have heard of Bill Gates and today Steve Jobs might be cast in the role of the master of dark forces by the detractors of success.

But that's just speculation. Apple kept the Mac closed and proprietary and that's essentially the same reason why OS/2 was a flop. IBM regretted having "lost control" of the PC and was determined to follow Apple's model with OS/2 and the PS/2. They did and the model produced the same results: tiny market share and a captive group of customers beholden to a single vendor.
