Charley, I am not sure, but I believe around the year 1000 there was a wonderful period in which scholars from all religions came together to study under Muslim leadership in Baghdad.

Some of the most impressively engineered buildings were created then, paper was invented, different fabrics including silk, along with many forms of mathematics including trigonometry.

Dr. Trifkovic, who lives in Belgrade, is probably not the best person to ask about whether Islam ever had a golden age. The Slavic experience under the Ottoman Empire was not pleasant.

If you want to know about the Roman empire, do you read about Marcus Aurelius or do you read about Caligula? Both, I suggest, and a lot more.

If you want to learn about Christianity, do you read about St. Francis or the Salem Witch Trials? Both, I suggest, and a lot more.

So I would prefer a more balanced point of view when it comes to Islam. JMO.

I do agree with Dr. Trifkovic, the Christian West is not going to convert to Islam. That's simply not an option. Nor is the democractic, open West, going to convert to Shariah law. To the extent that Muslims find this intolerable, they will simply have to learn to live with it, or live elsewhere.

Pope looks east:

Pope in major appeal to China for diplomatic ties

By Philip Pullella, Reuters, 10/24/01

ROME -- Pope John Paul II, in a move with possibly major political repercussions, offered an olive branch to China Wednesday, apologizing for errors of the colonial past and pleading for the establishment of diplomatic relations.

In his appeal to Beijing's communist government, which prohibits Catholics from recognizing his authority, the pope said the world was facing "profound disquiet" and would benefit if both sides had direct dialogue.

"The normalization of relations between the People's Republic of China and the Holy See would undoubtedly have positive repercussions for humanity's progress," he said in a message to a convention on dialogue between China and the West.

"I express the hope that concrete forms of communication and cooperation between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China may soon be established," he said.

China is one of the few countries without diplomatic relations with the Vatican and those Chinese Catholics who do recognize the pope as their spiritual leader worship underground.
