Hmm, I guess we've been looking at different times. Or maybe I've been watching the QQQs and the NDX futures. They usually trade ahead of the NDX and cause those big spike up/down moves in the QQQ (where it's not in sync with the NDX). It could be as simple as that. That's why on every anthrax scare, the QQQs seem to spike down 20 cents while the NDX slowly travels lower. . . then bounces right back.
