"English as the official language is simply recognition that we have to communicate to prosper. It makes sense,
..."

It can be easily argued that knowing the language of your customer is a distinct advantage, ie if you want to do business in Germany it would be advantageous to speak German. All multinational companies recognize this. In micro terms if you are a salesman and want to sell mozarella cheese in an Italian neighborhood in NYC you would be at an advantage to speak Italian. It seems clear that today, in the USA, speaking Spanish would put one at an advantage. So go ahead and declare English our official language but a declaration won't make it so. It will be viewed, as it was in other nations, as an attempt to stamp out someone's culture.
American tourists often have the arrogant attitude that everyone should speak English to accommodate them.....I often find it embarrassing to find so many multilingual foreigners who do speak English to us monolingual Americans...
