" Mostly people rationalize what they want to do and seek justification somewhere or other and they can usually find justification if they really want to do something. They build a case in their minds to support their wishes. The construction of the case comes AFTER the plan is decided, rather than BEFORE the plan.

All too often, investing behaviour works a bit like that too."

Perception is reality....... regardless of the facts. This is prevalent in just about in every aspect of every day life. Emotions rule above all, often to one's own peril. That's why we have too many Bin Laden's & Jim Jones types, lawyers, securities analysts, basher shorts, hypster longs, car salesmen, etc.. These folks know how to spin & manipulate while playing to the emotions of their intended audience. And it obviously works quite well.

Like you said, folks will rationalize something then find support for it after they already made up their minds. Clear facts, sound logic & good judgment are all too easily ignored once perception becomes someone's reality.
