Dave, "There are many reasons why corporations choose to repurchase their common stock."

I am not questioning those reasons, they all are fine.
My point (and the point of the old Forbes magazine article)
is that the current
reporting of major financial performance parameters
(like quarterly profit and EPS) is grossly misrepresented
by not including the buyback expenses. This is an
accounting loophole. When the buybacks are a necessity
for a company and are done at a regular rate of $1BILLION/Q
like Intel does, which currently exceeds their operating
profit by factor of 2.5 (making it actually a huge loss),
this misrepresentation turns into a fraudulent
scheme, to lure uneducated investors into bigger
investing into underperforming company.

It also gives a reason for idiots who apparently cannot
balance their own checkbook to mock about, say, AMD
loss of $200, while their own company has actual loss
of $600M.

That was my primary reason for the original comment:
if you are a thief, at least shut up and sit quiet.

Regards,

- Ali
