Re: ???: 10/18/01 AP story.

Officials in Broward and Marion counties approved touch-screen voting systems to replace the punch-card ballots that helped cause last year's election mess in Florida.

A purchasing committee approved the $16 million machines in Broward Tuesday, giving touch-screen companies until Oct. 29 to submit bids that will be reviewed Nov. 13. The committee consisted of county commissioners and Broward elections officials, including Election Supervisor Miriam Oliphant.

Only two companies that sell voting machines have been approved by the state to negotiate with counties. Broward officials said they hope to have the machines in place by mid-March.

"Today was a victory for Broward County and the elections process," Oliphant said. "The voters had already narrowed down what they wanted. They want technology."
