>SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- As an investment, Amazon.com is one of the last standing pure-play Internet icons that people love to hate and hate to love.
There are plenty of reasons investors love to short the stock, and plenty more why some investors -- who hopefully know that profits matter -- will hold back from blindly falling in love with the online shopping opportunity.

Amazon (AMZN: news, chart, profile) is widely scrutinized. Everyone knows its tale.

"My mother can recite the bull and bear case story for Amazon.com," said Jonathan Cohen, the hedge fund manger at JHC Capital Management who is perhaps best known for his bearish call on Amazon way back in 1998.

The data storage company reported late Tuesday second-quarter pro forma net income of $17.7 million, or 19 cents per share, down from year-earlier results income of $24 million, or 25 cents a share, and in line with the average analyst estimate compiled by Thomson Financial/First Call. Revenue for the period fell 5.9 percent to $80.9 million. SG Cowen said the company, which performed well amid the downturn, could experience significant EPS growth if a modest recovery unfolds next year. Meanwhile, USB Piper Jaffray said the stock was "fairly valued" at current levels. Among its peers, Emulex is scooting $3.22 higher to $26.38, McData is hiking $1.33 higher to $13.33 and EMC is 39 cents better at $12.54. Separately, Emulex said late Tuesday that its fibre channel host bus adapters will now be available from Dell Computer , as part of Dell's new storage area networking relationship with EMC .
