<<< Democracy is not foreign to us. My grandfather and my great-grandfather used to have a shura"—council—"in their tents. All the people came and participated in it. And this is a form of democracy. But when oil came it introduced a whole new culture here. People suddenly found themselves so rich that they didn't know how to respond. Powerful countries came in to exploit the oil, and a lot of middlemen became involved. There was no control, no accountability. And, in the process, a gap developed between the old generation and the new, and the new generation forgot a lot about its traditions and culture. Now we are returning to the concept of the shura in a tent. >>>

Hi Thomas M.; Cool link! It makes one wonder. If we'd left Hitler alone, by now his regime would undoubtedly have mellowed (like Franco's, but with farther to go), and we'd eventually have normalized relations, but I bet we'd still have problems with Nazis in other countries. ("Fundamentalist" Nazis, now there's a thought.)
