Tony, yes, snakebit usually gets a few comments:)As to IBM, they were in jeopardy for a few years, but they re-invented themselves, it was by no means a sure thing. Intel stands now at this same juncture. If they have a secret x86 64 bit project they dare not admit is as it would stall adotion of their new 64 bit departure from x86. However they can look ahead better than I can, and they can also look back to the microchannel fiasco. I then conclude that Intel has a 64 bit x86 project under development and it will use it as a last ditch effort to stave off the barbarians....should it be needed.
There can be no other conclusion. If they bet the farm on their 64 bit IA64 and it failed to gain mindshare then what happened to Apple would happen to Intel.
After all, wh ever thought mighty Apple would end up with 3% share? Who would ever think Intel would fall from the sky?

It may just happen.
