Admiral Leighton Smith is probably not your guy but he was "fired" (retired without foreknowledge) because he wouldn't play ball with "nation building".

a matter of weeks, not months. And that was the first I heard of it. And the

I remember that Clinton refused to inform the Joint Chiefs about one of his "Monica" bombing raids before it was launched - because they would have opposed it.
