<I know you're no fan of Powell> To put it mildly !
He was Chairman of the joint chiefs. What do joint chiefs smoke ? Not sure who the White House Chief of Staff was at the time. Above Powell in the food chain were the ones you cite and Defense Secretary Dick Cheney. It was Scowcroft who championed leaving Saddam in power as removing him was thought to be too destabilizing ( Yeah right !). I think W has learned from Dad not to end the action too quickly as the electorate has short memories.

RM,

1. read more on the Internet about Powell and his contribution to stop the Desert Storm ahead of time and who were the countries pressuring for that. At the time he had the president ear (will not go ahead with other conspiracy theories which may be or may be not be true).

I posted several weeks ago why I think Powell is arrogant and clue less and actually serves the interests of the Saudis. Evidence that he is floating in a factual vacuum was in today testimony before congress.

2. The British definitely made one of the greatest wrongs in contemporary history in their way of dividing the territories they controlled or influenced. Our generation is taking part of the brunt of those decisions. Hundred of thousand of people lost their life because those mistakes. Afghanistan and Pakistan are such example as is Iraq and Arab Peninsula or North Africa. Yes and you are right they brought to power all kind of tribe clans. .......... and you are right about the Wahabis .............. but this does not justify that present policy makers should continue to make mistakes which are redeemed with innocent lives.
