LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Two college students were arrested for an anthrax hoax that halted postal service in the town of Murray after white powder spilled from an envelope.

Preliminary tests indicated the substance was powdered sugar, Murray Postmaster Mark Kennedy said Wednesday.

The post office in the southwestern Kentucky community was closed Tuesday after the powder spilled onto a postal clerk's shirt.

Amy Wood, 20, of Benton, Ky., and Erin Creighton, 21, of Morganfield, Ky., both students at Murray State University, were arrested Tuesday. They allegedly intended to send the letter to friends as a hoax, Murray police Capt. Eddie Rollins said.

``I don't think they understood the seriousness of their hoax initially, but I think they were coming to understand the seriousness of it when they were taken into custody,'' Rollins said. Both were charged with a single count of mailing a threatening communication, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, said U.S. Attorney Stephen Pence.

I'm guessing putting black spots on your arms and dusting your uniform in white powder and coughing at each stop would not exactly be USPS approved behavior even for Halloween?

It is such a shame that these things are so serious. I long for the time that this will all be behind us.

<<but a practical joke could get you into some real hot water. >>

Some kid in Florida is looking at 15 years for his coffee creamer joke. He should have taken the test he was trying to get out of.

<<So right now the cutups have found a remote controlled "rat" that they send scurrying across the office floor. >>

That reminds me to get my battery powered bat out again.

Here in Dallas there is a reporter on one of the tv channels who is the "consumer advocate". He goes around saving us from ourselves and looking for evil bad scammy guys ripping off the elderly, that kind of thing, but tonight the story took the prize for how dumb can any one person be. Dan and I were on the floor by the end of the tale. I can't believe this guy let it air. He should be embarrassed.

It seems that a woman went to the Army-Navy store to purchase gas masks and protective clothing for her family. She spent over 500-- every cent she owned. ("I would rather be safe than have money") When she got home, the outfits didn't fit the children. The store said they would fit, she said pitifully and now they won't give me my money back.

She hauls out these camouflage looking suits and gas masks, big old things- and then she tells the reporter-- I can't believe he showed this on TV- that she had bought them for a 3 month old and a 16 month old.

Did they tell you they would fit, asks our intrepid reporter, angrily.
Yes, she says tearfully.
COuldn't you tell they were a little large? he says, being fair.
They said to use duct tape, she cries.
He turns to the camera.
Nothing makes me madder than to see innocent people ripped off, he says with emotion, and he packs up the stuff and takes it to the A-N Store, where the lady politely and calmly returns the money for the suits that were supposed to be for children. I'm sure they had no idea this woman meant for a newborn when she said she needed small.

ANyway, he goes back to the family and gives them their money, and the woman is very grateful because they had no money at all and they really needed it.
