The ultimate effect was crashing share prices as investors came to understand that these accounting ploys had made it appear that many companies were doing better than they actually were in reality. Lucent, Cisco, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Dell and even Microsoft all capitulated to highly questionable practices. These are not marginal penny stocks, but the blue chips of the last bull market, whose combined market capitalization at their respective peaks was equivalent to almost half of Japan’s GDP.
