Sun,
Good post. From the talking heads here, there is a feeling that the NA will be unable to do the job. We are bombing front line taliban positions for the past couple of days to facilitate that. If the NA was able to assume power the way you describe that would be a great strategy. When i saw live TV of NA their soldier were wearing sandals. This is a rag tag bunch. As far as Pakistan, it seems to me that they are trying to right a wrong they made. They are looking for particiation in a government of the Pashtun of the South. Not unreasonable either.
I believe some of the civilian casualties are coming from hits aimed at the taliban who are hiding in the civilian population. When we see some vehicles we probably strike and have some collateral damage. May be inevitable and may be counterproductive.
As far as starvation, we are supplying food in large quantities I believe, and the UN has stated starvation was coming before 9/11. mike

OT - We have moved this discussion to the AMAT off-topic thread. For my part I will simply say that almost every premise you have stated is in my view wrong. I think you are being very emotional here. We are not going to let the Northern Alliance run Afghanistan, they failed once already and are in the minority. We are going to put together a coallition of all groups under the UN. And we are not going to stop attacking Taliban forces and let our special ops people be constantly sniped at by Taliban sharp shooters. They started this and will have to pay for it. How else is it to be stopped?

RE: "Is it moral to force 2 MILLION innocent people into starvation and bitter cold winter so as to get to a few hundred criminals who killed 6000 innocent?"

The answer is NO! The question is, are we really doing this? Winter has not arrived yet and we, purportedly, are delivering food. Also, there are a few hundred criminals and, reportedly, 45,000 supporters who are complicit in the crime against us. These 45,000 happen to be the current rulers of Afghanistan.

RE: "Second, is it effective?"

I don't know and I am concerned that our military leaders don't know. I would guess that you don't know, also. The local political nuances involving Pakistan and Afghani groups are certainly beyond my grasp. Again, I must rely on our political leaders even though I am sick at the thought of who they are.
