re: Faced with decaying demand and shrinking market share it was natural decision for intel to try to regain market share during slow down period. That what I would do as well but Intel did not regain market share and hence at least at this point is loosing the price war.
The integral piece of logic that you missed is *what did AMD have to sacrifice in order to prevent Intel from gaining back market share?* Obviously, they had to sacrifice margins, and it ended up in disaster. Do you think that AMD's market share will continue to rise, now that they are no longer offering their processors at bargain basement prices? In short, Intel did not lose in the price war. They backed their competitor into a corner where the only place left to run is quanti-marketing with temporarily higher ASPs, but I don't think this will buy them market share. It might lessen their losses, though.
