Well, I'm afraid that's not how the Bush Administration sees it, nor how most European chancelleries view it --to say nothing of Arab countries. If anything, Israel has become a liability to the US... Israel has been useful during the Cold War as it helped police Arab nationalism. Anyway, times have changed, the world is no longer a merely post-colonial motley where arrogant, self-proclaimed civilized crusaders sweat "barbaric" Arabs, Negroes, and the like into yet another master/slave shell game... To put it another way, while Israel is doomed to degenerate into a Judeo-Fascist society, the US just can't follow suit: the US can't stick to a racist, colonialist foreign policy because it'd conflict with its own domestic interest. Indeed, think about it: so far, pro-Bin Laden demonstrations have broken out in the Muslim world only, yet, Nation of Islam's leader Louis Farrakhan has already distanced himself from the US's official line branding OBL as an arch-terrorist... See how the US's colonialist policy abroad could backlash into the domestic arena? Such an ominous event would draw the US 40 years backwards... and the US administration responsible for it would have committed the greatest crime against America, American values, America's role in History. And, precisely, Israel, as a Zionist den under the guise of a respectable "democratic state", no longer shares the same values as America. Ariel Sharon and his jingoist gang have perfectly understood that, hence Israel's shift away from the US, towards Russia and the EU. Russia, Europe (less Britain) and Israel share a common Arabophobic agenda and are facing the same demographic threat: North African immigrants in the EU, Muslim activism in Central Asia, and unyielding Palestinians....
