Tenchusatsu,

The goal of 30% market share should be seen only as a road to profits

What do you think about Intel's futile attempt to hold onto 80% marketshare, losing 96% of profit trying to achieve this goal?

Joe

Dear Tench:

Since the value in a company is supposed to increase when it is profitable, why is the book value of Intel decreasing, when it is supposedly making money? Answer, since Intel is not gaining book value, it is losing money somewhere. If a company is losing money somewhere, it is not profitable in an overall sense.

Pete

Tench Re >>..So let me repeat: Losses do not increase the value, or worth of a company<<<<<<<<<<

That really depends upon the type of loss. Taking a loss to close loosing operations can easily increase the value. INvesting money in research, can produce losses this quarter, but result in handsome profits later on. The primary loss any company should avoid is losing cash; and AMD did that. Basically its loses were paper loses, depreciation etc. which; while they are loses, are not as crucial as cash. And as far as cash goes, both Intc. and AMD have enough cash to operate 4 - 5 months without any revenue.

Both AMD and Intc seem to have called a temporary truce with rising ASPS, shortages, and AMD announcing conversion of Fab 25 to flash, and Intc. delaying its building plans. Lets hope this moment of sanity continues.
