I agree with your comments on the virtues of the US. I even signed a contract to have a house built in California in 1999 because I like the country so much.

Despite comments from Zeev and Rich1 to the contrary, I have never offered a justification for terrorist actions against the US. However the US is unpopular abroad. That is a fact. Whether deserved or not, it is a fact that is best understood. That is not the same as having sympathies or tolerances for terrorists, or for subscribing to the unpopularity. That point has been clarified by myself on SI many times, along with an admission that some of my comments may have been insensitively timed.

If there are aspects of the US which, however honorable, are used by enemies to persuade people to rally against the US, then failing to admit the unpopularity is to give ammunition to the likes of bin Laden. Whether the US deserves the unpopularity is not the issue, it is how the unpopularity is caused to spread and to be used against the US and its allies.

The Bush administration certainly has an understanding of this and seems to be making efforts to win friends in unusual places at the moment.

I am at a loss where the anti Israel comments originate from. It is not a point of view I hold, let alone have expressed here. In fact I have criticised the Palestinian Authority on a number of occasions on SI, and never challenged Israel's right to exist.
