Powell Calls Afghan Campaign A 'Just' and 'Noble' Cause
(CNSNews.com) - Secretary of State Colin Powell, testifying Wednesday afternoon before the House International Relations Committee on the status of the United States campaign in Afghanistan, said the U.S. has a "deep resolve" to make those who are responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon "pay for it."

Powell stressed the fact that the United States is unified in its war against terrorism. "We are unified under President Bush's leadership. We are unified to pursue those who are responsible for the tragic events of Sept. 11th," he said.

The campaign against terrorism, he said, is possible because of the broad international coalition that has come together to oppose Osama bin Laden and the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Powell said what happened was not just an attack on America, but also an attack on civilization and the world community. He continued by calling the terrorism a "scourge" targeted against civilization and the democratic way of life.

Powell also defended America's presence in the Persian Gulf, saying the reason for the attacks "has nothing to do with our presence in the Persian Gulf. We are there to defend Muslims from other Muslims."

"It is an attack against who we are, our value systems, our belief in the dignity of the individual, our belief in democracy, our belief in the free enterprise system. That's what it is - an attack against," Powell said. "It is a violation of the faith of Islam. It is a violation of every known faith..."

He then said that the international coalition was key in accomplishing the goals in the war against terrorism. "Without this coalition we would not be able to wage this campaign. We wouldn't be able to conduct this war," Powell said.

He said some feel that the coalition will break up, but instead, "It's been six weeks now, it's (the coalition) getting stronger."

Many nations have come forward to show full support for the US effort and have said they want to be a part of replacing the government in Afghanistan.

"We know that may require some peace keepers or others to go in to help this new government get up and running and started," Powell said.

"We are not the aggressor. We have never gone to attack any Islamic country. We have never gone to invade any Muslim people. We have never gone to subject them. We have gone to the Gulf to rescue Kuwait from Iraq. We are there as a force for stability. A force that protects the people of the region," he said.

"This is a noble cause that we are all embarked upon," Powell said. He also said the objectives would not be met until we win the war and "we are living in security again."

"I believe we will be successful," Powell said, "because the cause is just."
