Having been active in politics at the grass-roots level for years, I think you are partly right and partly wrong. I watched George Allen, our Senator, and Tom Davis, my Congressman, come up through the ranks. I would not be a bit surprised to see George Allen go further in national politics, maybe even President. They were not in "the elite," whatever that is, although people with money certainly have an easier time getting their ear. But politicians also listen to "the people," whatever that is. There's just so darned many people all talking at once that they can't always hear what we are saying. That's why they are always looking for consensus.

We have more than two groups jockeying for power. The Republican party alone has more than two groups jockeying for power.

Watching politics in action at the ground level is much different than watching it through the media.

I live amongst 260 million americans. I used to be able to name about a 100. Now with alzheimers I am lucky if I can name 50 !
