Best Buy receives approval for future shop purchase

Published Oct 25 2001

Best Buy Co., the largest U.S. electronics retailer, said that its
purchase of Future Shop has been cleared by the Canadian
Competition Bureau and that it expects to complete the
acquisition next week.

The $368.7 million purchase of Future Shop, Canada's largest
consumer electronics chain, will proceed as planned, Best Buy
said. Best Buy offered to buy Future Shop's outstanding
common stock for $10.81 a share in a bid scheduled to expire
next Wednesday.

The company in August reached an agreement to buy the
91-store Future Shop chain rather than open 65 of its own
stores in Canada. The transaction was scheduled to close in
September before being delayed by the regulatory review.

Shares of Minneapolis-based Best Buy rose 57 cents to $55.08.
